Restoration Project
In 2015, Utah’s State Historic Preservation Office awarded the Hyrum Historic Preservation Commission a matching grant to have a structural assessment and feasibility study performed on the Elite Hall. Not only did the report find the historical structure to be in great shape, but it made several recommendations with accompanying costs regarding upgrading the efficiency of the building and making the space more usable and aesthetically pleasing.
As you might guess, a complete restoration of the nearly 100-year-old structure has a lofty price tag, but giving this building its integrity back is well worth the expense. Built by early Hyrum entrepreneurs, it was the heart of the city for many decades as people drove from all over the region to attend the weekly dances on the legendary spring-loaded floor. From its erection in 1916 through the 1950s, it functioned successfully as a cultural center playing host to dances, dinners, gold and green balls, and sporting events, just to name a few.
Now, we want to resuscitate Hyrum’s heartbeat downtown by making the Elite Hall the city’s cultural center once again. Our vision is to provide a venue for not only themed dance events such as a Harvest Ball, Sweethearts Dance, swing dancing, etc., but also for other community events such as indoor movies, winter walking, athletic classes such as yoga, dancing, and aerobics, weddings and receptions, family reunions, holiday parties, art and quilt shows, presentations, concerts, and plays. People anticipated, traveled, and made sure to attend the fantastic events hosted at Elite Hall and we want to provide those opportunities again.
We are have formed the Elite Hall Restoration Committee, a group of volunteers dedicated to restoring the Elite Hall into a premiere community center. Working in tandem with the Hyrum Historic Preservation Commission, we have taken the first step to restore the exterior by performing strip-testing on the exterior masonry. We are now raising funds to expose, clean, repair, and waterproof the beautiful original masonry exterior, remove the entrance canopy, and replace the front doors to restore the Elite Hall’s original look. If you are interested in helping with any of our efforts (event planning, marketing, fundraising, skilled contractors/construction workers, etc.) please contact Jami at [email protected] or by calling 435-245-0208. Additionally, anyone interested in donating funds will be recognized on a donor wall inside the restored hall according to donation level.
